Battling Sin by Abiding in Christ POHFW

Preparing our Hearts to Worship

In an effort to help you prepare for the November 12, 2017, Sunday morning corporate worship gathering and to aid you in your own reflections on the Epistle of 1st John. I wanted to pose a few questions and provide a few resources to prayerfully consider over the coming days. Our sermon is entitled, “Battling Sin by Abiding in Christ.” The main Scripture for the day is 1 John 2:28-3:10. The other passages are either referenced in the message or provide additional insight for reflection.

(Pick and choose from the many resources and options, which I have tried to make available for your devotional life.)

From the Scriptures

Read and prayerfully reflect upon some or all of these Scriptures. Ask God to shape your life and your church’s life to match the heart of God:

Read or listen to 1John 2:28-3:10, Jn 15:1-10

(You can read or listen to all of these passages in a variety of translations at Bible.is.)

From the Creeds and Confessions

Heidelberg Catechism Q53

53. What do you believe concerning the “Holy Spirit?”

First, that He is co-eternal God with the Father and the Son. Second, that He is also given unto me: by true faith makes me a partaker of Christ and all His benefits, comforts me, and shall abide with me forever.

From the songs, hymns and spiritual songs of the Church

Abide with me (Matt Redman): Lyrics, Video

I will abide (Christ for the Nations) : Lyrics, Video

For Thoughtful Reflection, Prayer, or further Study

Read and reflect John MacArthur’s Abiding in Christ.

Read and reflect on Bill Kyne’s Abiding in Christ.

How is your battle with sin going?

When you face sin, do you normally think about Christ or how to defeat the temptation? Which would be more fruitful?

The Sermon will be available online on November 12, 2017 at 12:30 pm.
