BIBLE READING FOR THE WEEK

Enclosed is a paper with questions for you to consider as you read through Chapter 27 of The Story this week. Pastor Scott’s sermon next Sunday, Oct. 14th, is titled “The Walk to Emmaus” and is based on scriptures found in Chapter 27. Please bring the insert with you next week for reference during Sunday School discussion. If you do not have a copy of The Story, please let Pastor Scott know today.

  • Lanny & Christine S
  • Aaron & Megan S: Isaac, Thaddeus, Miriam

Pray for Christians in Burma (Myanmar): After shutting down at least 10 churches in early September, ethnic Wa rebels in eastern Burma (Myanmar) have closed dozens of other churches and detained 92 Christian leaders and 42 students in a bid to curtail Christian activities, sources said.

The United Wa State Army (UWSA) in late September detained the Christian leaders and students in territory it controls in Shan state, leaders of the Lahu Baptist Convention said in statement released on Tuesday (Sept. 25). Some students were also forced to serve as UWSA soldiers, according to the statement.

The 52 churches in Mong Pauk Township have been shut down, and the UWSA destroyed three church buildings and removed all Christian symbols such as crosses, according to the ethnic Lahu Christian leaders. A few religious schools also have been shut down.

Burma is about 80 percent Buddhist and 9 percent Christian. The country is ranked 24th on Christian support organization Open Doors’ 2018 World Watch List of the countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian.   (Morning Star News, October 1, 2018)

Pray for the lonely seafarers and their families: The Seafarers ministry needs good and Christian magazines, CDs and DVDs. They also are looking for more sponsors to fund the mission. To help or for more information, please contact the chaplain, Pastor John, at (561) 351-1239, (206) 778-1523 or pastorvanhemert@gmail.com.

MISSIONAL MARKER

The congregation of Hope in Christ Church has made the Spirit-filled decision to move forward and become a healthy missional church. This week’s Missional Marker is: Sacrificial and generous living and giving (Romans 12:1-8)

  • We help people discover, develop, and deploy their spiritual gifts.
  • We regularly, graciously, and unapologetically teach on the importance of financial stewardship in the spiritual growth of the Christian.
  • We have many examples of lifestyle choices being made on the basis of stewardship and the priority God plays in the lives of our members.
Sunday School Memory Verses
  • Wonder Class— Genesis 9:12-13 NIV
  • Dive Class— Psalm 23 NIV
  • Marvel Class— Psalm 51:10-12 NIV
ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congregational meeting:  There will be a pre-budget meeting on October 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the worship center foyer. This will be the only time to hear about the budget and offer feedback.

Special offering for GEMS: Once a year we are asked to have an offering to help support the GEMS program. This year, the deacons have chosen Oct. 21st, which is also our normal Sunday to support our outreach programs. The offering will be collected as usual for the outreach fund, with the designated checks and loose cash and coins being designated for outreach. We will then take up a second collection on behalf of GEMS.

Men’s Bible Study: The Men’s Thursday evening Bible study and fellowship begins October 18th. All men are welcome to come to an enjoyable, weekly Bible study and fellowship time on Thursdays from 7:00—9:00 p.m. in the administration building on the first floor. This is a friendly group who would love to welcome you!

Interfaith Coalition’s annual winter warmth drive provides warm outerwear for everyone from babies to seniors. Please bring clean, gently-used or new winter coats and jackets, gloves, scarves and hats to worship services through October 14th. If you are a knitter, handmade hats and scarves are also cherished. For many of our neighbors, this program means they won’t need to spend limited income on a winter coat, or do without. Thank you for sharing the warmth!

We need your smiles!  Please go to the church office today to have your photo taken for the new picture church directory.  We will try to fit a few people in after worship and before Sunday School begins.  Then we will be available again for a longer period of time beginning at noon after Sunday School.  It doesn’t take long.  We just need some willing subjects!  Please take a few minutes and stop by.  Thank you!

Standing against sex slavery in our county and our country: Join Engedi Refuge and local churches in an evening of prayer for an end to sex trafficking and for the recovery of women rescued out of slavery.  Sunday, October 7th, 6-8pm at New Song Church, 4600 Guide Meridian. Call 360.922.7600 (or ask Scott R or Scott E) for more information. Childcare will be available upon request.

The October Heartbeat newsletter is available in the foyer, or on the website.
