19 The Grace of Giving POHFW

Preparing our Hearts to Worship

In an effort to help you prepare for the May 26, 2019, Sunday morning corporate worship gathering and to aid you in your own reflections on What God wants us to Believe, Do, and Become. I wanted to pose a few questions and provide a few resources to prayerfully consider over the coming days. Our sermon is entitled, “The Grace of Giving”. The main Scriptures for the day are the 2 Corinthians 8:1-15.

(Pick and choose from the many resources and options, which I have tried to make available for your devotional life.)

From the Scriptures

Please read through Chapter 19 of Believethis week, this is an edited selection of Scriptures from the NIV that seeks to show how certain beliefs, ways of living and character qualities are elaborated upon throughout all of Scripture.

You may also like to read and reflect upon these other New Testament passages Philippians 2:6-9, Romans 5:3-5, Matthew 6:2-3, Luke 16:9

 Heidelberg Catechism Q110-111

What does God forbid in the eighth commandment?

God forbids not only such theft and robbery as are punished by the magistrate, but he also brands as theft all wicked tricks and devices whereby we aim to appropriate our neighbor’s goods, whether by force or with show of right, as unjust weights, ells, measures, and wares, false coins, usury, or any other means forbidden by God; likewise all covetousness and all abuse and waste of his gifts.

But what does God require of you in this commandment?

That I further my neighbor’s profit wherever I can or may, deal with him as I would have others deal with me, and labor faithfully that I may be able to relieve the needy.

Our World Belongs to God Article 25

Standing in our place,
Jesus suffered during his years on earth,
especially in the tortures of the cross.
He carried God’s judgment on our sin—
his sacrifice removed our guilt.
God raised him from the dead:
he walked out of the grave,
conqueror of sin and death—
Lord of Life!
We are set right with God,
given new life,
and called to walk with him
in freedom from sin’s dominion.
