- Cultures where people get new names throughout life
- Scripture isn’t ignorant to this fact (John 1:12, Gal 3:26, Gen 17:5, 15, 32:28, Jn 1:42, Acts 13:9)
- In Christ, we have a new name/identity
- What it means to be ‘in Christ’? (Gal 3:26, Jn 1:29, 20:31)
- Caveats
- Our identity is only changed when we receive Christ (John 1:10-12, Gal 3:23-26)
- The role of Faith
- Our old identity was
- Blind (John 1:10)
- Unwelcoming of God (John 1:11)
- Captives (Gal 3:23, Rom 2:15)
- Prisoner (Gal 3:23)
- Ruled over (Gal 3:25)
- Enslaved (Gal 4:3)
- Sinner
- New identity in Christ
- Clothed in Christ (Gal 3:27)
- Heard the statements, “The clothes make the man.” “Dress for Success”
- We are dressed for
- Righteousness – Rom. 13:14
- Righteous Deeds- Rev. 19:8
- Holiness – Eph. 4:24
- Wearing royalty (description of God) –(Eph. 6:11, Col 3:12-15)
- Beautiful – Luke 12:28
- Power – Luke 24:49
- Humility – 1Pet. 5:5
- Immortality – 1Cor. 15:53
- Unified in Christ (Gal 3:28)
- Abraham’s offspring (Gal 3:9, 29, Rom 4:16)
- To be part of the people of God and an inheritor of the promises of God
- To be considered righteous. (Gal 3:8, Rom 4:9)
- To be Abrahams’s seed is to be approved by God.
- Heirs according to promise (Gal 3:29)
- Owners of everything (Gal 4:1)
- The Promise we inherit is God with us (Col 1:27)
- Adopted (Gal 4:5)
- To be legitimate, wanted, fully a member of the family, never to be abandoned again. It is to be without fear! (Rom 8:14-15)
- To Know God is working through us and for us. (Rom 9:4)
