Heartfelt Worship (Ps 138)

Worship is not about Form but Heart (Dt 6:7, Jn 4:24)

  1. Worship is our response to God’s self-revealing
  2. Worship includes
    1. Confession (Ps 51), lament (Ps 44), praise (Exo 15), thanksgiving (Ps 138), and adoration (Ps 8).
    2. Dancing (2Sam 6:14), Fasting and silence (Mt 6:16-18, Ps 46:10)
  3. Heartfelt – as an adjective describing motivation (Dt 10:12-13, 2Chr 29:31)

Psalm 138

  1. An Example of Heartfelt worship
  2. Whole heart (Dt 6:5, Ps 9:2, 119:10)
    1. Sings (Ps 138:1, Eph 5:19, Ps 8:5, Ex 20:23, Gen 23:6)
    2. Bow down (Ps 138:2, Ps 95:6)
    3. Involves Thanks (Ps 138:2)
    4. Call’s out for help (Ps 138:3,7) – expression of need and dependence
    5. Tells others (Ps 138:4-6)
    6. Based on Faith (Ps 138:8, Jer 29:11, Rom 8:29, Phil 3:21)

How can we prepare our hearts for worship

  1. Heartfelt worship begins each morning as we get up. (Dt 6:4-9)
  2. Heartfelt worship continues each night as we lay down to rest. (Dt 17:19)
  3. Heartfelt worship continues in preparing to come together with other people (1Cor 14:26)
