Sermon Outline

Read: Lk 2;1-7, 1Jn 4:2-3, 2Jn 7

 

  1. Advent Overview
    1. This year, I would like us to reflect on the Humanity, Divinity, Sonship and Royalty of Jesus Christ.
    2. The humanity of Jesus has been challenged all the way back to the first century of the Church.
      1. Notice what the Apostle John writes (1Jn 4:2-3, 2Jn 7)
      2. John Understood the competing worldview of the Jew and the Greek!
    3. Challenges to the Humanity of Jesus
      1. Greeks struggled to see full humanity of Jesus,
      2. Jews struggled to see full divinity of Jesus
      3. The Struggle in the History of the Church
  2. Reasons Jesus needed to be human
    1. God’s justice/holiness must be satisfied (Rom 6:23, HC12)
    2. Only Humans can be punished for human offenses (Heb 10:3-4, HC14-15)
    3. Righteous flesh is needed (1Pt 3:18, 2Cor 5:21, Heb 7:26 HC15)
    4. For salvation to be possible, a human must live a life of total conformity to the law of God. (Rom 5:19, HC16)
  3. Jesus’ Humanity
    1. Was Jesus Fully Human? (Lk 2:1-7)
    2. Being human is not identical with being sinful.
      1. Adam and Eve in Creation, pre fall.
      2. Humanity in New Jerusalem.
    3. Jesus was Human and sinless (Heb 4:15, 1Cor 15:45)
  4. What aspects of Humanity Did Jesus take on?
    1. Jesus grew in Wisdom and Stature (Lk 2:40, 52)
    2. Feelings
      1. Cries at loss of Lazarus (Jn 11:35)
      2. Agonizes in Gethsemane (Matt. 26:38)
      3. exhaustion (Mk 4:38)
      4. Rejoiced (Lk 10:21)
      5. Angry, Grieved (Mk 3:5)
    3. human body with all its limitations and weaknesses (Heb 2:14, Gal 4:4, Mt 4:2, Jn 4:7, BC18-19)
      1. Tempted (Lk 4:13)
      2. Need to be prayerfully dependent (Mk 1:35, Jn 12:49, 5:19, Lk 3:21, 11:1, Mt 26:36)
      3. Submission (Mt 26:39)
    4. Mind
    5. Jesus was human in every respect of the word.
  5. Implication of Jesus’ Humanity – Why does it matter that Jesus was human?
    1. We are redeemed (BC 18)
    2. We are Brothers with Christ (Heb 2:11-12)
    3. Destroys power of death (Heb 2:14, BC 19)
    4. Delivers from Fear of Death (Heb 2:15)
    5. Acts as Merciful and Faithful High Priest (Heb 2:17-18)
    6. We can relate to him.
    7. Worthy of emulation.
    8. To deny the full humanity of Christ is to remove the hope of salvation from the gospel.
