Psalm 68 – What should we do when we have Enemies?

Sermon Outline

  1. We all have enemies, but what are we to do when we identify who they are?
    1. That depends on whether they are our enemies or God’s.
      1. I am to forgive My Enemies (Eph 4:31-32)
      2. God will deal with His Enemies
    2. Psalm 68 gives us one way of dealing with our enemies when they are also God’s enemies.
      1. The Word is full of advice in dealing with our enemies.
      2. Jesus tells us to Love and pray for our enemies (Mt 5:43-44)
      3. He tells us to turn the other cheek (Mt 5:39)
      4. We are told to bless those who curse us (Lk 6:27-28)
      5. Even to be a servant of those who are using us (Mt 5:40-41)
      6. Not to rejoice or be glad when our enemy falls (Prov 24:17)
    3. How can we do this, you might be asking? (1Jn 4:19, 1Pt 2:23)
    4. When our enemy is God’s enemy, we should Cry out to God for judgment!
  2. Request for God to rise up in Judgment (Ps 68:1)
    1. Enemies = those who hate God
      1. How do we know who hates God?
        1. “You will recognize them by their fruits.” (Mt 7:20)
        2. If we Love God by obeying his commands (Jn 14:15)
        3. Then we Hate God by ignoring his commandments (Ps 68:21, 30; 1Jn 2:9, 11)
      2. 2 Results of Judgment
        1. Enemy is dispersed (Ps 68:1-2)
        2. Righteous will worship (Ps 68:3-4)
          1. Praise His Name
          2. Awed by his power (rides upon the clouds)
          3. Cares for Fatherless (Ps 68:5)
          4. Defends widow (Ps 68:5)
          5. Cares for lonely (Ps 68:6)
          6. Leads the prisoner (Ps 68:6, 18, Eph 4:8-12)
          7. God leads them into Promised Land (Ps 68:7-10)
          8. Scatters foreign enemies (Ps 68:12-14)
          9. Bears our burdens (Ps 68:19)
          10. Saves from death (Ps 68:20)
  3. When facing enemies, we must ‘entrust ourselves to him who judges justly.’ (1Pt 2:23)
