Bible Reading for this Week

Enclosed is a paper with questions for you to consider as you read through Chapter 26 of The Story this week. Pastor Scott’s sermon next Sunday, Oct. 7th, is titled “The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” and is based on scriptures found in Chapter 26. Please bring the insert with you next week for reference during Sunday School discussion. If you do not have a copy of The Story, please let Pastor Scott know today.

PRAYERS

Each week we pray for members of our church family. Suggested prayers are for their spiritual growth, opportunities to see Christ in their everyday lives, and anything else that God puts on your mind for them.  This week please pray for:

  • Keith S
  • Kyle S
  • Karen S
  • Phil & Jolene S: Maggie, Clara, Alice
  • Don & Elaine S

Pray for East Coast Victims of Hurricane Florence: World Renew Disaster Response Services (DRS) is responding to Hurricane Florence, which recently hit the East Coast. DRS regional managers are working with local officials and organizations to start initial planning to send early assessment and clean-up volunteers. Please pray for the success of the teams that will be helping, and for those in need. You can give to Hurricane Florence response at worldrenew.net/Florence

Pray for Christians in Upper Egypt:  Nearly a year after declaring that attacks on Christians had hit a level not seen in decades, a Coptic Orthodox bishop in Egypt continues to lament a stream of incidents of violence against churches in Upper Egypt. Coptic Orthodox Bishop-General of Minya Anba Makarios this month confirmed that an Islamist assault on four Christians’ homes after mosque prayers on Aug. 31 left two Copts with knife wounds in the head and face. Egypt ranked 17th on Christian support organization Open Doors’ 2018 World Watch List of the countries where it is most difficult to be a Christian. (Morning Star News, Sep 26, 2018)

The Story Cards for Children: Children are invited to take a story card home with them today. The cards correspond to the chapter of The Story that we are covering each week. Look for the card box at the back of the sanctuary every Sunday.

MISSIONAL MARKER

The congregation of Hope in Christ Church has made the Spirit-filled decision to move forward and become a healthy missional church.  This week’s marker is: Heartfelt Worship (Psalm 138:1a; John 4:23 )

  • We exalt and celebrate God for who he is, what he has done, what he is doing and what he will do.
  • Worship reflects careful preparation to help give voice to many dimensions of response to God such as adoration, praise, contrition, lament, and commitment.
  • People leave worship knowing something more about the heart of God and about their own hearts.
