Sermon Outline

  1. On this most holy night, which we sing about in our songs and carols, we have been singing new songs
    1. a. Songs which the psalmist and the ancient Hebrews didn’t have
    2. We sing of the Joy that has come to the world b/c God incarnates into the world.
    3. We sing of a round yon virgin who gives birth on a silent night
    4. We sing of Angels singing sweetly over the plain announcing good tidings to shepherds.
    5. These are not songs that the Jews could sing in David’s day
    6. And worship songs continue to be written like the Getty’s We Sing the Song of Emmanuel about the Christmas miracle of God coming to earth
  2. i. We speak of it week in and week out, seeking to help all see that the wonder of Christmas affects and influences
    1. every passage of scripture we read,
    2. every person we meet,
    3. every task we undertake,
    4. every word we speak
    5. We “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples” (Ps 96:3 ESV).
      1. God and man residing in perfect unity in Jesus Christ, the son of Mary and the Son of God.
      2. He came as a babe, he cried as a child, he grew in knowledge and favor with God and men.
      3. He heals the sick, frees those affected by demons, returns dignity to the outcast
      4. And forgives sin
      5. Truly, we say with the psalmist, “”For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.” (Psalm 96:4 ESV)
      6. We speak of his glory because Jesus reigns
        1. He created the world but he also judges it
        2. He declares all the ways that we fail to love God and love others.
        3. He reveals all the hypocrisy and selfishness
        4. His very life makes clear the sin in our lives
        5. His connection to the Father makes known our lack of connection
        6. And you would think that would drive people to despair, but actually it drives them to worship. It gives them hope and peace.
          1. You see, when people finally see themselves as they are, then they can rest from their labor and rest in the Lord
          2. Then they can rejoice with the sea, and the field, the stars and the trees
          3. They can admit that nothing they do can ever bring them into the same place as Christ, and that brings peace and rest, dependence and trust.
          4. That allows people to look to the baby lying in the manger and see the hope of humanity, the hope of forgiveness, the hope of new life.
    6. He is the precious savior.
