Unholy Worship in Modern Israel, Anabaptist Europe, and Pentecostal Services
When did today’s passage happen?
-
-
-
- Is it chronological?
- Not necessarily (Judg 20:28)
- Micah’s story could be before Judge 19-21
- Or they could be disconnected
- A Theological and Literary structure
- Theologically it is a great summary to the book, showing why the people keep ending up oppressed and in need of deliverance
- From Literary standpoint, this also leaves the book on a real downer, so that a reader longs for a King of Israel which the next books will tell about.

Idolatrous Faith & Priests for hire: 2 Problems
-
-
-
- Idolatrous Faith
- What is idolatrous faith? Pure Idolatry and Syncretism
- Pure Idolatry
- Syncretism (Judg 17:3, 13)
- Syncretism always thinks that it is worshipping God.
- Syncretism always has an action or activity that is aligned with the worship of God that is clearly contrary to Scripture. (Dt 5:8, ex 32:4, Dt 9:12-19, Ex 34:17, Dt 27:15)
- So what are some modern ways that syncretism is at work in our lives, or the church?
- Turning social issues into gospel
- Prosperity theology
- So what is the syncretistic tendency that you struggle with?
- Priest for Hire
- 2 possible reasons for the Levite’s leaving Judah (Judg 17:8-11)
- A warning for those in ministry
- Why does all of this happen? (Judge 17:6, Prov 14:12)
- Idolatrous Faith

The Gospel
-
-
-
- Firstly, Micah’s name means “Who is like Yahweh?” (Ex 34:6-7)
- Secondly, our hope in recognizing that there is a King in Israel.
