A Theological Introduction

A Divine Appearance (Judg 2:1-5)

          1. God comes to speak (Judge 2:1)
            1. God begins by reminding his people of his saving activity on their behalf.
            2. God reminds of the covenant and its stipulations (Judge 2:2)
            3. God rebukes (Judge 2:2)
              1. What covenants did they make? (Judge 3:6, Mal 2:14)
            4. God will be faithful to his promises to bless and to curse (Dt 27, 28:15-68, 28:25, 48, 29:24-28, 30:1-3)
          2. The people wept (Judge 2:4)
            1. Was this contrition or consequence?

Joshua’s Death (Judg 2:6-10)

          1. Joshua was a faithful leader of Israel.
          2. What happened – A Dead Faith?

Apostasy (Judges 2:11-3:6)

          1. What is apostasy? (Judge 2:11-13, 17, 20, 3:6)
          2. God’s response to apostasy. (Judge 2:12, 14, 20-22)
            1. Anger is mentioned 3 x
            2. Giving over to people who abuse them.
            3. No longer enjoying the blessings of the covenant (not drive out)
            4. Testing by God to discern the heart/obedience
          3. Why does it happen? (Judge 2:20)
            1. Not an ignorance problem but an experiential problem.
          4. What should be done about apostasy in one’s life?
            1. Repentance
            2. Cultivate intimacy with God

Applying to our life

          1. God calls his people to relationship with him
          2. God uses thorns to breed dependence
