Ephesians 6:1-3 Christ in Children

 

  1. Children Obey your parents in the Lord for this is right. (Eph 6:1)
    1. A Daughter with her Mother.
    2. Relation to Ephesians 5:18-21
  2. Christ Obeyed His heavenly Father
    1. Scriptural Proof (Mt 3:17, Jn 5:19, 12:49, Lk 22:42)
    2. Why did this matter?
      1. 2 Reasons
        1. Sin – sin is lawlessness (1Jn 3:4)
        2. Israel – Israel was called by God to be the son of the Father.
          1. Hosea 11:1–2
        3. Salvation and Jesus (Heb 5:7-9)
      2. A theological parallel between Christ-Church-Marriage and God the Son-God the Father-Children (Eph 6:1)
    3. Who is addressed?
      1. Children.
      2. In that ancient world, a child was always under his/her father specifically, and parents generally.
      3. Scriptural proof that Children means ALL are enjoined to Obey and Honor (Rom 1:30, 2Tim 3:1-5, Mt 10:21)
        1. All 3 of these are about adults.
        2. Jesus was in submission to his Father until the end of his earthly life! (John 5:19, 12:49, Lk 22:42)
    4. How can we obey our parents?
  3. Christ Honored His heavenly Father
    1. What is Honor and how does it differ from Obedience (Rom 12:10)
    2. Scriptural Proof that Christ honored his heavenly Father (Is 29:13, Jn 8:49, Num 25:12-13, Heb 7:17, 1Sam 2:30, Heb 2:9)
    3. How can we honor our parents?
      1. Protect their reputation
      2. Seek their opinion
      3. Give them Time and Money
      4. etc
  4. The Promise (Eph 6:2-3, Dt 5:16)
    1. Originally the promise was given to Israel as part of the covenant stipulations for living in the Land, but Paul is drawing it forward into a type of proverbial promise if you will.
  5. Imitating Christ
