Sermon Outline
- On this most holy night, which we sing about in our songs and carols, we have been singing new songs
- a. Songs which the psalmist and the ancient Hebrews didn’t have
- We sing of the Joy that has come to the world b/c God incarnates into the world.
- We sing of a round yon virgin who gives birth on a silent night
- We sing of Angels singing sweetly over the plain announcing good tidings to shepherds.
- These are not songs that the Jews could sing in David’s day
- And worship songs continue to be written like the Getty’s We Sing the Song of Emmanuel about the Christmas miracle of God coming to earth
- i. We speak of it week in and week out, seeking to help all see that the wonder of Christmas affects and influences
- every passage of scripture we read,
- every person we meet,
- every task we undertake,
- every word we speak
- We “Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples” (Ps 96:3 ESV).
- God and man residing in perfect unity in Jesus Christ, the son of Mary and the Son of God.
- He came as a babe, he cried as a child, he grew in knowledge and favor with God and men.
- He heals the sick, frees those affected by demons, returns dignity to the outcast
- And forgives sin
- Truly, we say with the psalmist, “”For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods.” (Psalm 96:4 ESV)
- We speak of his glory because Jesus reigns
- He created the world but he also judges it
- He declares all the ways that we fail to love God and love others.
- He reveals all the hypocrisy and selfishness
- His very life makes clear the sin in our lives
- His connection to the Father makes known our lack of connection
- And you would think that would drive people to despair, but actually it drives them to worship. It gives them hope and peace.
- You see, when people finally see themselves as they are, then they can rest from their labor and rest in the Lord
- Then they can rejoice with the sea, and the field, the stars and the trees
- They can admit that nothing they do can ever bring them into the same place as Christ, and that brings peace and rest, dependence and trust.
- That allows people to look to the baby lying in the manger and see the hope of humanity, the hope of forgiveness, the hope of new life.
- He is the precious savior.
