Soli Deo Gloria Luke 2:8-20

  1. Christmas is a scary holiday!
  2. Why were the shepherds terrified? (Luke 2:8-9)
    1. Shepherd, the manly men of the middle east. (Jer 50:44, 49:19, 1Sam 17:34-35)
    2. 2 Reasons (Luke 2:9)
      1. An Angel appeared (Dan 8:17, Lk 1:13, 30)
      2. God’s glory envelops
  3. We are sinners and should be terrified too.
    1. We deny God
    2. We try to work our way to God (James 2:1-, Isa 64:6)
    3. Only God can save us (Lk 2:10-14)
  4. The Incarnation glorified God (Jn 1:14, Heb 1:3)
    1. This child brings peace by rescuing people from sin (Luke 2:11, Mt 1:20-21, Heb 4:15, 2Cor 5:21)
    2. Peace is release from the fear of wrath and retribution, particularly God’s.
    3. Peace is freedom from the slavery of sin
    4. Peace is freedom to worship and flee to God not flee from him.
  5. Our Response
    1. Believe the message.
    2. Join with the Shepherds who praise God. (Lk 2:20)
    3. Worship God along with the heavenly host (Lk 2:14)
  6. Our terror of God is turned to Peace with God!
