What do you rejoice in?

1. 1. 1. 1. For what would you shout out in joyful exclamation?
         2. Notice how the Psalmist begins and ends Ps 146
         3. What is praise? (Ps 146:2, Col 3:16)
            1. Praise is the joyful, loud, rejoicing in God for who He is and what he does.
            2. Calvin commenting on Psalm 145 says, “…We only praise God aright when we are filled and overwhelmed with an ecstatic admiration of the immensity of his power.”
         4. The Psalmist begins and ends with imperatives – commands to worship God.

Why should I rejoice in God?

1. 1. 1. 1. Humanity doesn’t last (Ps 146:3-4, Jam 4:13-14)
            1. What is Trust? (Ps 22:4-5, Ex 35:5)
            2. Psalmist starts by warning of trusting in princes, but what else do we trust in? (Ex 35:5)
               1. fortifications (Dt 28:52),
               2. people (Judg 9:26, Jer 17:5-7),
               3. other nations (2Ki 18:21),
               4. oppression and perverseness (Is 30:12),
               5. military means (Isa 31:1),
               6. knowledge (Is 47:10),
               7. deceptive words/religiousity (Jer 7:4-14),
               8. one’s work and treasure (Jer 48:7),
               9. idols (Hab 2:18)
         2. God is your Help (Ps 146:5, Gen 2:18, Is 26:4)
         3. God is the Creator of everything (Ps 146:6)
         4. God is faithful (Ps 146:6)
         5. God is Just (Ps 146:7, 2Cor 5:10)
         6. God is compassionate (Ps 146:7, Mt 14:13-21, 15:32-39)
         7. God is redeemer (Ps 146:7, Lev 25:8ff, Acts 12:5-11, 16:25-34)
         8. God is healer (Ps 146:8, Mt 9:27-31, 12:22-23, 20:29-34, Mk 8:22-26, Lk 18:35-43, Jn 9:1-41, 2Cor 3:16)
         9. God is lifter (Ps 146:8, Mt 26:6-13, Jn 8, Mk 2:3-12)
         10. God is lover (Ps 146:8, Mt 17:5, Zech 9:9)
         11. God is sustainer (Ps 146:9, Dt 10:19)
         12. God is thwarter (Ps 146:9, Gen 50:20, Esther 5:14, 7:10, Mt 27:23)

Conclusion: God is King (Ps 146:10)
