Sermon Outline

Introduction (Isa 53:3)

        1. Humility is a quality that we all value,
        2. But one that very few people want to cultivate.
        3. The humiliation of Christ

Our passage begins with two key themes (Jn 13:1)

        1. Jesus’ foreknowledge and
        2. Jesus’ Love (1Jn 4:19)

The Passover Supper

        1. The Liturgy
        2. The interruption (Jn 13:2-3)
        3. Jesus Serves (Jn 13:4-5, Mt 18)
        4. Humility and humiliation (Phil 2:5-8)

The Exchange with Simon Peter (Jn 13:6-10)

        1. Bathe and Wash cp to Justification and Sanctification (Heb 10:22)
        2. The invitation to humility
        3. Spiritual lesson  External Application (Jn 13:12-15)
          1. Because they have been cleansed by him, we should live as he has lived and do as he has done.
          2. Why – b/c Jesus gave an example and he invites us into humility (2Pet 2:6, Jam 5:10)

No weaseling out (Jn 13:16-17, Phil 2:8-9

A Blessing (Jn 13:17)

          1. First, on need to know the Jesus story and his sacrificial cleansing
          2. Second, one needs to implement the Jesus life in his own life.

A strong warning (Jn 13:18, Mt 7:16)

Will you humble yourself today and serve?
