- David begins by relating a non-specific time in his life when he was in the dumps and needed rescue. (Ps 40:1-2)
- The pit of destruction, the miry bog David refers to is a horrible place. (Jer 38:1-6)
- But notice what David says about whatever situation he finds himself in (Ps 25:3)
- Hope based on the character of God (Isa 25:6-8)
- David believed that God had promised to hear his people’s cry for deliverance – that was written all over the Torah (Dt 30:2-3)
- Deliverance brought him to praise God (Ps 40:3)
- A new trouble emerges (Ps 40:12-13, 17)

The Psalm and Christ

- Jesus said that all scripture testifies to him (Jn 5:39-40, Heb 10:5-8)
- Jesus is the one who waited patiently for God’s deliverance
- Jesus became sin for us (2Cor 5:21)
- Jesus is the blessed man (Ps 40:4)
- Jesus is the end of the sacrifice because he was the servant of the Lord (Ps 40:6-8, Ex 21:5-6)
- Jesus is Praying for his people in sin (Ps 40:12-17)

Psalm 40 and us

- First, we are the body of Christ set firmly on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ, the rock of ages.
- Each of us has a story of God’s mighty working that needs to be told. (Ps 40:3)
- Consider getting your ear pierced as a servant of Christ (Ps 84:10)
- Second, we await the full import of our deliverance and so we find ourselves in the place of needing to wait patiently for the Lord to return. (Ps 40:16, Rev 5:9-10)
- Communion (1Cor 11:26, Isa 25:6)
