bible reading this week
This week, read Chapter 30, “Humility,” in Believe. Pastor Scott will be preaching from Luke 14:7-11, 18; 18:9-12 next Sunday. The sermon title is “Humility in Christian Life.”
PRAYERS
Each week we pray for members of our church family. Suggested prayers are for their spiritual growth, opportunities to see Christ in their everyday lives, and anything else that God puts on your mind for them. This week please pray for:
- Glenn (Junior) J
- Jay & Avis K
- Marilyn K
- Wilma K
- Don K
- Michael & Connie K
- Heidi K
CRC Prayer Requests:
(Chaplaincy and Care) Care facilities—With our society’s aging demographics, a growing number of our chaplains work in retirement villages, nursing homes, and long-term care facilities. Pray that they may be a light of hope and encouragement for all who live in these care centers.
(Resonate) Africa—Resonate missionary Renita Reed-Thomson, who serves with Discipling Marketplace Leaders throughout Africa, asks you to pray for her and her team as they disciple marketplace leaders, who can then train more believers to reclaim the marketplace for Christ.
(World Renew) Disaster Response Services—When our DRS volunteers go out and serve in communities hit by disaster, they are sometimes met with suspicion; but as they do what they say they are going to do, a sense of trust and respect for the church and for Christians grows. Please ask the Spirit to continue to move in and through our volunteers to display Christ’s love in vulnerable communities.
MISSIONAL MARKER
The congregation of Hope in Christ Church has made the Spirit-filled decision to move forward and become a healthy missional church. This week’s Missional Marker is: Compelling Christian Community (Acts 2:42-47)
- We understand that our love for one another is a powerful testimony to the deity of Jesus.
- We love each other as we are, not as we should be.
- We share life together beyond the worship service.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Meeting and Lunch Today: Adults and children will remain together during Sunday school time for a presentation from the team that went to Ethiopia, and also a brief congregational meeting. Hospitality Team will be providing lunch for everyone: hot dogs with chili, sloppy joes, salads, chips and pumpkin pie. It is not necessary to give, but a basket will be available if you would like to donate towards the cost. Tables will be arranged by elder/deacon districts, so please look for the place with your name on it.
Christmas Decorating Opportunity: Ida and Christine would appreciate help with decorating the church for Christmas. Please come on Saturday, Nov. 30 from 1:00-3:00.
Sunday School Helpers Needed: Would you like to help children’s Sunday school? Please see the sign-up clipboard in the foyer and add your name to one of the empty spots. We need someone to sign-up soon for Dec. 15, 22, and Jan. 5 with the Marvel class.
Thanksgiving Worship Service: All are welcome and encouraged to come Thursday, Nov. 28th at 9:30 a.m. to the Thanksgiving service. The offering will be designated for the Benevolence Fund.
Adult Sunday School Books: Please visit the book table in the foyer to pick up a letter from Ida Richards, and to preview the books that we will be using after Believe. Let us know that you will be participating by signing the book list and noting which books we may order for you. If you are able to help with the cost, suggested donations are listed on the information board.
Whatcom Chorale with Don Recker and Ali Laninga: G.F. Handel’s 1741 “The Messiah,” was composed in a mere 24 days! This monumental work will be presented by the Whatcom Chorale & Symphonia and features choral numbers, four professional soloists, and symphonia (small orchestra). “Messiah’s” enduring blessing over the years stems from the fact that the lyrics are taken directly from Scripture, resulting in the gospel story in music and song.
- Date/Time: Saturday, December 7, 7:00 p.m.
- Place: Mount Baker Theatre, downtown Bellingham
- Tickets: All seats ($20 adults; $10 students) are reserved and must be obtained online (www.mountbakertheatre.com) OR at the door.
Those planning to attend should get tickets ASAP, since they’re selling fast. This historic theatre seats about 1500. Sound-wise, there are no bad seats. Ali Laninga and Don Recker, members of the Whatcom Chorale, are thrilled to be in “The Messiah” chorus, and can tell you more or answer questions.
