Sermon Outline

  1. Therefore
    1. What is the therefore, there for?
    2. Context
    3. Paul gives them 3 Commands (Phil 2:12, 14, 18)
  2. Command 1: Work out your own salvation (Phil 2:12-13)
    1. Notice how Paul begins with terms of endearment (Phil 2:12, 4:1, 1:7-8, 2:1, Prov 27:17)
      1. Importance: Can never admonish, correct, encourage until people know you love them and care for them.
    2. After expressing Love, he recognizes their past successes (Phil 1:5, 4:15, 1Th 2:13)
    3. Work out your own salvation (Phil 2:12-13)
      1. This is not a call to salvation by works, but a salvation that results in works
      2. I believe that this whole section is Paul’s way of seeking to encourage the Philippians to keep up ministering in the face of opposition, hardship and suffering.
  3. Command 2: Do all things without grumbling or disputing… (Phil 2:14)
    1. Notice the reason for ministering without complaint (Phil 2:15)
      1. Paul’s desire is their purification
        1. Blameless (Heb 8:7)
        2. Innocent (Rom 16:19)
        3. Without blemish (Col 1:22, Num 6:14, Heb 9:14, 1Pt 1:19)
      2. The contrast
        1. They are crooked and twisted (Lk 3:5, Dt 32:5, Mt 17:17)
        2. They are in need of the Light of Christ
  4. Command 3: Be Glad and Rejoice (Phil 2:17-18)
    1. Leaders exist to make others the main focus.
    2. This should bring Joy to all involved.
  5. Conclusion (Jn 15:13)
