Sermon Outline
- Therefore
- What is the therefore, there for?
- Context
- Paul gives them 3 Commands (Phil 2:12, 14, 18)
- Command 1: Work out your own salvation (Phil 2:12-13)
- Notice how Paul begins with terms of endearment (Phil 2:12, 4:1, 1:7-8, 2:1, Prov 27:17)
- Importance: Can never admonish, correct, encourage until people know you love them and care for them.
- After expressing Love, he recognizes their past successes (Phil 1:5, 4:15, 1Th 2:13)
- Work out your own salvation (Phil 2:12-13)
- This is not a call to salvation by works, but a salvation that results in works
- I believe that this whole section is Paul’s way of seeking to encourage the Philippians to keep up ministering in the face of opposition, hardship and suffering.
- Notice how Paul begins with terms of endearment (Phil 2:12, 4:1, 1:7-8, 2:1, Prov 27:17)
- Command 2: Do all things without grumbling or disputing… (Phil 2:14)
- Notice the reason for ministering without complaint (Phil 2:15)
- Paul’s desire is their purification
- Blameless (Heb 8:7)
- Innocent (Rom 16:19)
- Without blemish (Col 1:22, Num 6:14, Heb 9:14, 1Pt 1:19)
- The contrast
- They are crooked and twisted (Lk 3:5, Dt 32:5, Mt 17:17)
- They are in need of the Light of Christ
- Paul’s desire is their purification
- Notice the reason for ministering without complaint (Phil 2:15)
- Command 3: Be Glad and Rejoice (Phil 2:17-18)
- Leaders exist to make others the main focus.
- This should bring Joy to all involved.
- Conclusion (Jn 15:13)
