Sermon Outline

  1. The Harvest:
    1. Harvesting is supposed to be a joyous time of the year
    2. But there are those to whom harvesting is not joyous
    3. The Question
  2. This is where we pick up the story: (Jn 4:27)
    1. What kind of rabbi is this?
    2. The woman leaves (Jn 4:28-30)
      1. Note her clear evangelical speech, even though she still has some questions herself.
  3. Feeding on God’s word
    1. Meanwhile… (Jn 4:31)
    2. BUT… (Jn 4:32)
    3. So… (Jn 4:33)
    4. Jesus said… (Jn 4:34)
      1. Jesus now takes the time to correct them,
      2. Food that feeds Jesus is (Jn 19:30)
      3. God’s will is (Jn 4:35-42, 6:29, 5:39-40, Rom 10:14)
      4. God is defined here as the “one who sends” (Jn 20:21)
        1. This way of defining God, puts his mission right at the center
        2. We are missionaries
    5. God’s Timing for the Harvest (Jn 4:35)
      1. Harvest times are always short, intense, and they take everyone.
      2. Harvesting starts with lifting up our eyes to see (Is 40:26, 51:6, 60:4)
        1. Prayer is Key (Matt. 9:37-38)
        2. Right NOW!
      3. Samaritan ingathering
        1. To prove it is ripe, notice what happens (Jn 4:42)
    6. So, what is keeping you from being more active in the harvest?
