Denial and Faithfulness in Scripture

      1. Many examples of denial in Scripture: The Example of Joseph (Gen 37-50, Mt 10:32-33)
      2. But God’s faithfulness to the unfaithful also fills the pages of Scripture (Gen 3:16-17, 21:1-7 15:13-14, Exo 12, Act 11:23)

Context

      1. Annas and Caiaphas – Whose the High Priest? (Jn 18:24, 28)
      2. The Unnamed Disciple: A Call to Personal Reflection (Jn 18:15-16)

Peter’s story

      1. A simple question – Are you a disciple of Jesus?
        1. What is a disciple? (Jn 12:25-26, 8:31, 15:6, 12:42-43)
        2. Is Peter a disciple? (Jn 18:18, Tit 1:16)
      2. And then the 2nd and 3rd time (Jn 18:26-27, 13:38)
      3. Our job isn’t to preserve our life, to make it easy, to protect ourselves
      4. Our job is to follow and confess Christ.

The Picture of Faithfulness

      1. Jesus’ faithfulness not to betray his disciples (Jn 18:19, 2Tim 2:13)
      2. Jesus’ final words to Peter (Jn 21:18-19)
      3. The faithful one calls us to faithfully follow him even after we have failed.
