BIBLE READING FOR THIS WEEK

Please spend time reading through Hosea in preparation for the next sermon on Sunday, Sep 2nd. We will resume reading from The Story the following week, so you might like to begin looking over chapter 22, which includes scriptures for the Sep 9th sermon.

PRAYERS

Each week we pray for members of our church family. Suggested prayers are for their spiritual growth, opportunities to see Christ in their everyday lives, and anything else that God puts on your mind for them. This week please pray for:

  • Brian & Melissa K:  Abee, Brenna, John, Zachariah
  •  Marilyn K
  • Wilma K
  • Don K
  • Doug & Winnie K

Envision Ministry in Bellingham: Pray for the team – Mitch and Rochelle Senti, Jon Ng with Street Connect, Mitzie Crosser with hospitality and one-on-one meetings with ladies, Morgan West at the Drop In Center, Glenda at the Samish Way hotel for a Jesus Study to start up there, and also Morgan Potter our admin assistant.

Christians in India:  When a Hindu in northern India got rid of the idols in his house after several visits to a church, Hindu nationalists found the perfect opportunity to make life a nightmare for a pastor’s family, sources said. Since the Hindu nationalists accused pastor Avianshu Kalra of desecration of Hindu idols and forcible conversion in Ambala, Haryana state, he and his family have had to leave their home, his wife has suffered pregnancy complications, and his father has been suspended from his work as a journalist after being hit with a defamation suit, (Morning Star News, Aug 20, 2018). India ranked 11th on Christian support organization Open Doors’ 2018 World Watch List of countries where Christians experience the most persecution.

MISSIONAL MARKER

The congregation of Hope in Christ Church has made the Spirit-filled decision to move forward and become a healthy missional church. This week’s Missional Marker is:

Life Transforming Walk with Jesus (John 3:3, 30; Phil. 1:6)

  • We teach our people how to be attentive to Christ in all circumstances.
  • Our people understand the radical nature of the message and mission of Jesus that continually deconstructs and reconstructs a person’s life.
  • Our people are equipped and growing in their ability to use a variety of spiritual growth resources, experiences, and settings.

SERVANTS NEXT SUNDAY:  SEPTEMBER 2, 2018

  • Greeters:  Gloria and Darryl G
  • Cookies:  Karen S, Elaine S, Christine S
  • Serving Assistants:  Maggie, Mattea, Kylie
  • Ushers:  Helen B, Ken W
  • Foyer Monitor:  Ken W
  • Prayer Room:  Don V

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Family Promise Volunteers:  Our next week to serve with Family Promise at First Christian Church is September 2-9. There will be a short meeting after church today for a chance to sign up for various ways to serve.

Save the Date!  The Vitality team is excited to announce that Tena Crosby will be returning to Hope in Christ Church on October 5 and 6. Tena will continue her presentation on Communication Muscles. More details to follow over the next few weeks.

Children’s Sunday School: Calling all past, present, and future Sunday school teachers! It’s time to pick your spots for teaching our amazing kids in the two classes we have for the 2018/2019 church year. Sunday school starts September 9th, and ends June 2. You will find the sign up sheet posted in the foyer near the credenza. You have the option of signing up for a consecutive three week unit or six week unit. Please look closely at the dates listed in the units, as there are some breaks in the dates due to holidays or events.

Interfaith Coalition Announces the Second Annual Family Promise BED RACE TO END FAMILY HOMELESSNESS: A fun event raising awareness and funds for a serious need, this competition involves teams building and renovating something into a bed that can be pushed on a race course. Companies/congregations/individuals can sponsor beds for the race, costumes and themes are part of the fun. Teams of 5 (4 pushers and 1 rider) will race head to head against other “Beds on Wheels” for bragging rights and prizes around a U-shaped track. Awards will be offered in several categories as well as for most funds raised. Enter by Sep 23 for the Sep 30 event. See the website for examples and more details:  www.familypromisebedrace.com

Service Opportunity in Seattle: Geoff and Ashley Van Dragt, whose family has roots in Whatcom County, are looking for help to recondition a chapel near the University of Washington, where they minister to graduate students. They hope to plant a new church in the chapel, but the Van Dragts need help with lots of cleaning, hauling away of junk, yard work, painting, and projects that require more skilled labor (i.e. electricians). The next service date is Sept. 8. In addition to helping, it is hoped that volunteers will be willing to cover at least some of the cost of resources needed to finish these particular jobs.

Serve Those With Disabilities: Cascade Connections is seeking caring and compassionate people to help support and serve individuals with disabilities. Cascade Christian Home in Lynden needs part-time staff for assisting clients with all activities of daily living including cooking, cleaning, bathing and going on supported trips in the community. Staff will provide all the necessary training to those who are willing to serve. If you have a heart for this type of ministry or for more information, please call a manager at (360) 398-2052 or e-mail wbranch@ccsite.org.
