Sermon outline
One of my Great Failures
Context of Job
-
-
-
- Job is a story of one man’s intense suffering and loss
- The book opens up with a description of Job (Job 1:1-5)
- But then God allows Satan to test Job (Job 1:6-2:10)
- Monologues
- Job begins by lamenting his birth (Job 3)
- Eliphaz, Job’s friend, responds (Job 5:17)
- Job’s response (Job 6:2-4, 10)
- Job charges them with withholding kindness from a friend (Job 6:14)
- Job calls then treacherous/dangerous (Job 6:15-17)
- Job shames his friends (Job 6:18-20)
-
-
Failure and Disappointment are another aspect of shame.
What does the Gospel say to this kind of shame?
-
-
-
- Success is not the solution to failure
- God’s desire for those who failed is our hope (Isa 54:1-6)
- The smile of God for the failed is our hope (Num 6:24-26)
- Tell God about your failures so he can heal you (1Jn 1:9)
- God alone is successful, rest in him.
