Shame as degradation, diminishment, and no reputation (Dt 25:3, 27:16, Lk 15, Mt 21:28ff, 1Sam 18:23

Shame as revulsion (Ex 7:18-21, 8:14, Eccl 10:1, Prov 13:5

Shame as rejection (Zeph 2:1)

        1. Positively word can mean intense desire (Ps 84:2, 10)
        2. Negatively, as no longer desired (Zeph 2:1)

The gospel

        1. The gospel as raising up (Ps 138:6, Prov 29:23, Mt 5:3, 11-12, Isa 57:15)
          1. Where degradation destroys reputation, the Gospel lifts up the lowly
          2. Where degradation reduces humanity, the Gospel says God took on Humanity
          3. Where degradation disobeys the one to whom honor is owed, the Gospel says Christ obeyed in our stead, thereby honoring God in every way.
        2. The gospel as a sweet smell (Phil 4:18)
        3. The gospel as God’s desire for you and your desire for God (Hosea, Rom 13:14, Gal 5:16-24)
        4. The gospel as incorporation into the family of God (Jn 15:15, Mt 12:48-49)
