The priesthood of Christ is one of the harder things (Heb 5:5-11)

The Levitical Priesthood

          1. OT Roots (Ex 28, Num 1:48-50, 3:5-10)
          2. What were they doing?
            1. Collect tithes from brothers (Heb 7:5)
            2. Offered daily sacrifices (Heb 7:27)
            3. BUT there was a problem: They could Not perfect people (Heb 7:11)
          3. Why was it unable to perfect and restore relationship?
            1. Legal position by descent (Heb 7:16)
            2. Many in number because they died (Heb 7:23, Rom 6:23)
            3. Weak (Heb 7:28, Acts 28:9, Gal 3:23-24)

Melchizedek

          1. Genesis provides us with the historical background (Gen 14:18-20)
          2. Psalms provide us with a prophetic word (Ps 110:4)
          3. Hebrews gives us a theological lens (Heb 5:10 6:20, 7:1-28)
          4. The King of Righteousness and Peace (Heb 7:2, Ps 76:2)
          5. Priest of the Most High God (Heb 7:1)
          6. Received tithe from Abraham (Heb 7:2,4)
          7. Blessed Abraham as one superior to him (Heb 7:7-8)
          8. 3 more arguments from the silence of scripture (Heb 7:3, Jn 3:14-15)
          9. Consider Melchizedek (Heb 7:4)

Jesus’ priesthood

          1. Change of law (Heb 2:17, 4:14-15, 7:12, Rom 3:27, Heb 7:19)
          2. Of tribe of Judah, not Levi (Heb 7:13-14)
          3. Indestructible life (Heb 7:16)
          4. Installed by oath (Heb 7:20-21)
          5. Guarantor of a better covenant (Heb 7:22, Jer 31:31-34)
          6. Permanent priesthood (Heb 7:24)
          7. Able to save those who draw near to God (Heb 7:25)
          8. Intercedes for our salvation (Heb 7:25)
          9. High priest, Holy, Innocent, Unstained, Separated from sinners, Exalted (Heb 7:25-26)
          10. Single sacrifice (Heb 7:27)
          11. Made perfect forever (Heb 7:28)
          12. Better hope to draw near to God (Heb 7:19)

Only FAITH in CHRIST can save!
