Sermon outline

Presents that keep giving

Many themes of the last few chapters are repeated In Hebrews 10:1-18.

          1. Law was a shadow of the good things to come (Heb 10:1, 8:5, 9:9, 11, 24)
            1. What are the good things to come that the Law foreshadowed? (Heb 10:1)
              1. Redemption (Heb 9:12)
              2. Purification (Heb 9:14)
              3. Rest (Heb 4)
              4. Forgiveness – all the sacrifices point to this
              5. Entry into the presence of God (Lk 23:45)
              6. Eternal party – all the festivals point to this
              7. Intercession (Rom 8:34)
              8. Blessing for obedience (Dt 27)
              9. All of this is fulfilled and realized in Christ.
            2. Levitical sacrifices aren’t effective in changing people (Heb 10:1-2)
            3. The Single sacrifice of Jesus is better than many sacrifices of priests (Heb 10:11-12, 7:27-28, 9:6, 25)
            4. Christ is enthroned but complete victory is still being worked out (Heb 10:13, 1:14, 2:8
              1. But Who are Christ’s enemies? (Mt 13:29, Lk 19:27, 1Cor 15:24-26, Jam 4:4)
            5. If all of this is repetition what is the point?
              1. Repetition drives home a point we are prone to forget.
              2. The repetition allows for some new things to be added.

What new things does Hebrews 10:1-18 add?

          1. The law can’t perfect you (Heb 10:1) but Christ can (Gal 2:20, Heb 10:14)
          2. God’s desire was to do his will not sacrifice (Heb 10:5-9, Ps 40:6-8, 51:16-17, Lk 22:42, Hos 6:6)
          3. Sanctification comes by Christ’s obedience to God and his offering for us (Heb 10:10)
          4. Our sin is not remembered (Heb 10:17)
          5. Forgiveness cancels the need for sin offerings (Heb 10:18)

Conclusion

          1. Jesus has secured what no other person, system, or action could.
          2. Rejoice and go tell it on the mountain.
