  1. Election
    1. Undergirding this whole Prayer is the doctrine of Election (Jn 17:2, 6, 9, 11-12, 24)
    2. Other prominent places Election is revealed in the Gospel of John (Jn 6:37, 44, 15:16)
    3. We find this doctrine of election expounded in Belgic Confessoin Article 16, Canons of Dort I and Romans 9:11-12.
    4. Why is Election important?
      1. Election Glorifies the Father
      2. Election brings Eternal life to individuals
      3. Election reveals the Heart of God
      4. Election leads people to obedience
      5. Jesus prays for the preservation of the elect
  2. How does Election glorify the Father (Jn 17:1-2)
    1. Consider how many definite persons would praise, honor and extol God [those are other ways of saying glorify God] apart from election? (1Cor 15:22, Eph 2:1, Col 2:13)
    2. Second, Election glorifies the Father by showing God’s power over death
  3. Election brings Eternal Life. (Jn 17:2-3)
    1. Election is the mechanism by which God distributes his life to those lacking true life
    2. Eternal life is an intimate knowledge of the Father and the Son (Jn 17:26, Lk 23:34, Mt 28:18, Jn 17:9, 24, Lk 15)
  4. Election reveals the heart of the Father (Jn 17:6, Eph 1:4, Rom 1:18, Col 3:5-7)
  5. Election leads to Obedience (Jn 17:6-8, Ezek 36:26, Jn 6:29, 3:18, 20:31, 1Jn 3:23)
  6. Jesus prays for the preservation of the Elect (Jn 17:9ff)
    1. Within the Family of God, the Son prays some remarkable things
      1. Keep them in your name (Jn 17:11-12, 20-23)
      2. Christ’s joy is fulfilled in them (Jn 17:13)
      3. Protected from evil/Evil one (Jn 17:15)
      4. Sanctified (Jn 17:17)
      5. Come to dwell with the Son in glory (Jn 17:24)
      6. We experience the Father’s love as Christ experiences it (Jn 17:26)
