Sermon Outline

 

  1. What is worship? (ask the Q and solicit input)
  2. The Setting of 1Chr 16
    1. The ark has come to Jerusalem.
    2. In this setting that David discerns that the proper thing to be done in the tabernacle is to offer thanks to God through song (1Chr 16:7)
      1. 2 Things from this verse worth noting:
        1. First – who is thanking?
        2. Second – why thanks?
      2. Who is thanking? (1Chr 6:39-43, 1Pet 2:5, 9)
      3. Why thanks?
        1. B/c the Human heart is demanding
        2. And singing praise to God is an act of worship that reshapes the heart.
  3. An Example of Thanksgiving (1Chr 6:8-36)
    1. Summary of the worshipping life (1Chr 16:8)
      1. Worship begins in Thanks
      2. Worship then proceeds to Requests
      3. Worship ends in Mission
    2. Giving Thanks can be general but ought to be specific (Gen 29:35, Ps 107:1, 8, 118:21, 119:62, 139:14)
    3. Call upon his name (2Ki 5:11, Gen 4:26, Phil 4:6, Col 1:3, 4:2)
    4. Make known his deeds among the peoples! (1Chr 16:8-12)
      1. Missions, evangelism – sharing the faith is the logical outflow of a life of worship!
      2. Declaring what God has done (Ps 89:1, 106:8, Ex 15:1-21, 1Chr 16:9)
        1. Our worship songs and our worship life and our prayer life and evangelistic life must cover from creation to redemptive consummation. (1Chr 16:9)
        2. Why – because these are the wondrous works of God (Heb 11:3, Gen 3, Ex 34:6, Gen 24, Exo 1-14)
        3. We are to revel in this, but more importantly we are to revel and exult in the one who is behind all of this (1Chr 16:10)
        4. Remember his miracles and judgments (1Chr 16:12)
        5. His Wondrous works are the covenants (Gen 3, 9, 12, 15, 17, 1Chr 16:15-22)
      3. Every Day (1Chr 16:23)
      4. To Every Nation (1Chr 16:24)
        1. 5 reasons (1Chr 16:25-26)
          1. For great is the Lord
          2. For [He is] greatly to be praised
          3. For he is to be feared above all Gods (Jn 3:18)
          4. For all gods of the people are worthless idols
          5. For God made the heavens
