Sermon Outline

Leading is hard work, but when you finish what do you say to the ones succeeding you?

Call the Power brokers (Josh 23:2)

          1. Elders and heads (Gen 18:12, Dt 21:19, Ex 24:1, 6:14)
          2. Judges and officers (Dt 20:5)
          3. Why is Joshua’s agedness noted twice? (Josh 23:1-2)

Joshua’s final words to the leaders of Israel

          1. Reminds them of God’s activity on their behalf (Josh 23:3, 14)
          2. Press on! There is still work to be done (Josh 23:4-5)
            1. The program and plan of God isn’t coming to an end.
            2. There is more to God’s promises, so don’t settle.
            3. Trust God to bring you farther
          3. Encourages them to be faithful to God (Josh 23:6-11)
            1. So what does that look like to be faithful?
              1. We are not to be spectators (Josh 23:6)
              2. Don’t get entangled with idolaters or idolatry (Josh 23:7)
                1. Many ‘nots’
                2. Modern day idolatries
              3. How do you know if you are holding fast/clinging to God? (Josh 23:8)
              4. Love God (Josh 23:11, 1Jn 5:2-3, Dt 10:12)
              5. Jesus: another way of picturing faithfulness. (Heb 12:2, Rev 1:5)
          4. Joshua then warns them of the result of not being faithful to God (Josh 23:12-16)
            1. A Marriage application (2Cor 6:14, 1Cor 7:39)
            2. As God was faithful to his promises, he will also be faithful to his threats (Josh 23:14-16)
            3. And it is still this way today in one way (Heb 12:6, 10)

Conclusion

These are words that all of us need to remember, not for fear of losing our place in Christ, but for encouragement that God has so much more he wants us to experience so we should not rest and stop but keep pressing on and encouraging those after us to do the same until all the world knows of the glory of God.
