2 Commands for Husbands (Col 3:19)

1. 1. 1. Command 1: Love your wives
         1. Continuously, intentionally, actively – love them.
            1. We are to love the Brotherhood (1Pt 2:17)
            2. We are to love one another (1Pt 1:22)
            3. Jesus commands us to Love our enemies 3x (Mt 5:44, Lk 6:27, 6:35)
            4. And 3x a husband is commanded to love his wife (Eph 5:25, 5:33, Col 3:19)
         2. What does it mean to love someone?
            1. Do you recall Jacob’s love for Rachel? (Gen 29:18)
            2. Love doesn’t harm (Rom 13:10)
            3. Love is (1 Cor 13:4-8)
            4. Because love seeks her best – it will be expressed in devotion to her (Mt 6:24)
            5. Loving also means speaking the truth to her. (Mk 10:21)
         3. Husbands do you understand the gravity of the command you are being given? (Eph 5:25-27)
            1. Love doesn’t demand anything
            2. Only in Walking with Christ can this happen
      2. Command 2: Do not be harsh with them

1 Command to the Wives (Col 3:18)

1. 1. 1. “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” (Colossians 3:18 ESV)
      2. Submit – (Eph 5:24, Tit 2:5, 1Pet 3:1)
         1. Given this, the idea of submission includes
            1. Voluntary obedience (Lk 2:51)
            2. Recognition of God given position of authority (Rom 13:1)
            3. Honor and reverence (1Cor 16:16)
         2. Practical Considerations
      3. As is fitting to the Lord (Col 3:18, Eph 5:4, Phile 8)

The Gospel in all of this: a Reversal of Eden
